MBBS Seats for SC, ST, and OBC
- SC Students: Before 2014, there were 7,700 MBBS seats for SC students. This number has increased to 17,000.
- ST Students: Before 2014, there were 3,800 MBBS seats for ST students. This number has increased to 9,000.
- OBC Students: Before 2014, there were less than 14,000 MBBS seats for OBC students. This number has increased to 32,000.
Total MBBS Seats
As of 2025, there are approximately 117,825 MBBS seats available across 778 medical colleges in India. The total number of MBBS seats has increased significantly over the past decade, with a 118% increase from 51,348 seats in 2014 to 112,112 seats in July 2024.
Reservation in MBBS Admission
The reservation criteria for MBBS admissions in India are as follows:
- SC: 15%
- ST: 7.5%
- OBC (Non-Creamy Layer): 27%
- EWS: 10%
- PWD: 5%
These reservation percentages apply to both the All India Quota (AIQ) and State Quota seats.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Speech
In his recent speech in Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the significant increase in medical colleges and MBBS seats in the country. He mentioned that the number of medical colleges has increased from 387 before 2014 to 780 as of 2025. Additionally, he announced that the government plans to create 75,000 new medical seats over the next five years.
