Following Orders from the Center, Twitter blocks over 80 posts and accounts.

Legal notices from the government through 2021, social networking platform Twitter has prohibited access to more than 80 connections on its website, principally individual posts but also a significant number of accounts. The demands from the government were sent between January 5, 2021, and December 29, 2021, according to a document the platform submitted to the Lumen database on June 26. The Lumen database stores information regarding web links or accounts that prominent internet service providers like Google, Facebook, and Twitter have been ordered to prohibit by anybody in accordance with applicable laws.

The worldwide advocacy organisation Freedom House, which conducts research and advocates for democracy, political freedom, and human rights including freedom of speech and expression online around the world, is said to have requested that the social network restrict tweets from them.

A report by a well-known American non-profit body that claimed internet freedom in India was declining was also listed among the content that was requested to be blocked. The database does not, however, contain information regarding whether the request to block a link or account was carried out.

According to the paper, the administration asked to have the tweets of Jarnail Singh, an assemblyman from the Indian National Congress, and other members of the Aam Aadmi Party blocked. Additionally, the government asked Twitter to block the Kisan Ekta Morcha account. The majority of the tweets and Twitter accounts that were requested to be blocked were visible to users, according to a random examination.

The umbrella organisation of farmers’ unions, Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), expressed strong opposition to the government’s requests for the blocking of tweets from those who supported it in a statement posted on Monday.”Samyukta Kisan Morcha vehemently opposes and condemns the Union Government’s directive to block Twitter accounts associated with the agriculture movement.

Without giving any prior notice, Twitter withdrew about a dozen Indian accounts, including the Farm Movement-affiliated account @kisanektamorcha.
